What is the Colossus of Florence?
The Colossus of Florence is a stone statue that stands about 11 meters (36 feet) high and represents the Apennine Mountains, the mountain range that runs through Italy. The statue is inspired by Greek mythology and depicts an elderly man crouching on the shore of a lake, squeezing the head of a sea monster. The statue is surrounded by other sculptures and fountains that illustrate themes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, such as Pegasus, Parnassus, and Jupiter.
The statue is not only a stunning visual spectacle, but also a complex hydraulic system that produces water effects and sounds. The statue has a network of pipes and valves that allow water to flow through its body and out of its mouth, eyes, and nostrils. The statue also has a series of chambers and caves inside its body that were used for various purposes, such as hosting musical performances, displaying mining scenes, and even fishing.
